The timber is harvested in an environmentally responsible manner, and then processed locally in Oregon. Over the last 100 or so, western juniper has increased its population and range. The increase in western juniper threatens watersheds by lowering the watertable and competes with other vegetation for water resources. Areas with high juniper densities have minimal or no ground vegetation.
- Highly durable, once dried the wood shrinks and swells less than many other Pacific Northwest species such as Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and western red cedar, as well as most hardwoods.
- The most rot resistant species of tree in the Pacific Northwest.
- In a long term post service life study since 1928, Oregon State University reported Western Juniper to last 30+ years, longer than any other untreated western species.
- The wood is aromatic and offers moth-repellant and bug resistant characteristics similar to eastern red cedar which is a closely related species.
